Philip Wilson "Secret Ballot" Petition 2010-025

I just ran into a woman with a petition for a state constitutional amendment "protecting secret ballots." The actual change in the law seems to be regarding union membership. Here's the petition text http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/2010petitions/10init_pet.asp#2010025 and the full text http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/2010petitions/2010-025.aspContinue

Kelly Maddy Gallup poll registers most support ever for marijuana re-legalization

It’s not a question of if cannabis will be re-legalized; it is a question of when, where, and how. Stats guru Nate Silver has opined that overall support for re-legalization should top 60% by 2022/2023 independent of any other factors but the continuing movement of Baby Boomers into reContinue

Seth Jackson The Lie Machine (Rolling Stone Obtains Docs-Rt Wing Coordinating Mobs)

"According to internal documents obtained by Rolling Stone, Conservatives for Patients' Rights had been working closely for weeks as a "coalition partner" with three other right-wing groups in a plot to unleash irate mobs at town-hall meetings just like Doggett's. Far from representing a spontaneous upwelling of populist rage, the protests were tightly orchestrated from the top down by corporate-funded front groups as well as top lobbyists for the health care industry. Seth Jackson Foaming at the mouth hypocrisy

There are legitimate sounding rationales to oppose health care reform and even more reasons to be concerned about the status quo but we tend to spend a lot of time on complete nonsense. Repeatedly conservative critics of Obama’s views on health care reform have attempted to label him as “fascist” and “communist.” Many even use those labels interchangeably as if they are the same political/economic system. I will remind the public again, communists sought to end the private sector, fascists soug… Continue

Philip Wilson Where's the party?

Who here has read Laura Flanders's Blue Grit? She makes the point that a party which only comes out at election time to try to win elections is weak compared to one that's seen as actively working for citizens at all times. The GOP succeed because they can call on churches; they're using the churches' credibility as a substitute for having their own. If Democrats intend to be just a secret society here, then we're conceding. We won't gain ground if we stay underground. Continue

Seth Jackson Missouri candidate stays above fray

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri’s 2010 Senate contest is an open-seat race, but you’d hardly know it from the campaign that Democrat Robin Carnahan is running. For the past seven months, she’s followed something akin to an incumbent’s strategy, keeping a low profile, refraining from making much news and mostly ignoring GOP challenges and demands. It’s a stay-above-the-fray approach that is frustrating and befuddling Missouri Republicans and their likely 2010 nominee, Rep. Roy Blunt. Read more: htt… Continue

Seth Jackson New Oped to the Globe: please proof/comment before I send

I have been increasingly concerned about the intensity and tone of language about Hispanics in the media and in this community. This is not about political correctness. You can say what you want and if I think it is inaccurate, so can I. First, not all people with brown skin are Mexicans. A Joplin Globe on-line reader recently said in response to an article about Judge Sotomayor’s appointment to the Supreme Court: “Why wouldn’t we just as well welcome Mexico as the 52nd State?” Judge Sotomayor… Continue

Krista L. Stark Hinkle Ace Hardward in Webb City and the "Tea Party"

To all Joplin Area Democrats and Liberals, Hinkle Ace Hardware in Webb City on Madison Ave. had an advertisement for the "Tea Party" on 4th street on there Electronic Sign on April 15th. Our Obama Neighborhood Team Webb City Warriors decided to call them to let them know that the unfortunate decision to advertise such a Right Wing Extremest event, will prevent us from shopping at their store in the future. I was a regular customer of Hinkle Hardware and let them know that when I called to speak… Continue

Julie Support Intellectual Freedom

I'm an English major and I'm reading a young adult novel by Chris Crutcher called Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. Truly, it is appalling that so many individuals and parents want this book banned from schools. As a future teacher, I feel it will be my duty to bring truth to my students. Frankly, I cannot stand those books that sugarcoat the lives of teenagers. They are not real. Crutcher's work is reality. Fact of life: reality is more bees than butterflies, but when we take it off of our shelves,… Continue

T Teeter Post Election News, Notes, and Thank Yous

I want to congratulate President-Elect Obama, Governor-Elect Nixon, and the local volunteers that helped make it happen. We were blessed by the Obama campaign's decision to place a field office in Joplin. We had staffers from all over the country and local volunteers working our local towns, some of which had not been canvassed on behalf of a Democrat for generations. Going door-to-door and encouraging neighbor-to-neighbor conversations, they made some huge gains in SW Missouri. In both Jasper… Continue

T Teeter The Joplin Globe Endorses Barack Obama for President

http://www.joplinglobe.com/editorial/local_story_302211616.html?keyword=topstory "Obama’s ability to transcend generational, racial and partisan divisions, his thoughtful approach to weighty issues and message of bipartisanship resonate with many Americans. There are some who see him as simply a gifted speaker, but his words inspire. We believe that Obama can make those words a reality — making “change” more than just a campaign slogan, but a launching point for a brighter future for all Americ… Continue

Joplin Attorney Obama to campaign in rural Missouri

Obama to campaign in rural Missouri By SAM HANANEL The Associated Press WASHINGTON | Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is coming back to Missouri this week to campaign in rural areas of the state. It's part of his strategy to visit parts of the country that have received little attention from Democrats in past campaigns. The daylong visit on Wednesday will include Springfield, Rolla and several other smaller cities and towns that are still being finalized. "This is a microcosm o… Continue

T Teeter My Plan for Iraq - by Barack Obama

My Plan for Iraq By BARACK OBAMA Published: July 14, 2008 CHICAGO — The call by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki for a timetable for the removal of American troops from Iraq presents an enormous opportunity. We should seize this moment to begin the phased redeployment of combat troops that I have long advocated, and that is needed for long-term success in Iraq and the security interests of the United States. The differences on Iraq in this campaign are deep. Unlike Senator John McCain, I o… Continue

T Teeter Jasper County Democratic Central Committee - June Newsletter

Notes from the Chair Only change is constant, I've heard, so I have tried to keep that in mind over the past week or two as things have progressed... July 14... Margaret Donnelly, candidate for State Attorney Gen-eral, had planned on being in Joplin, and we had planned on doing an event in the park. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict came up and Ms. Donnelly had to postpone her visit. I do not as yet have a rescheduled date, but know that she is very interested in coming to Joplin to talk w… Continue
